During the regular 4 p.m. meeting on December 4th, the Skanska team at Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport was faced with an unscheduled action item: having to rush to the airport’s parking deck to help a passenger who had suffered a heart attack and collapsed. Our team’s knowledge of what to do during a medical emergency helped save the victim’s life.

USA Building Project Executive O.T. Delancy named to ENR Southeast’s Top 20 under 40 list

O.T. Delancy, project executive for USA Building in Florida, has been recognized as one of the construction industry’s top leaders by being named to ENR Southeast’s Top 20 under 40 list. Honorees were chosen from 88 entries based on selection criteria that included career experience, industry leadership and community service. Previously, we shared that James Bailey, Phoenix Division manager for USA Civil West, was named to ENR Southwest’s Top 20 under 40 list. Congratulations to both our winners!

Issues with our construction performance in Latin America have led to us to change our presence in that region. Click below to find a link to the news story on OneSkanska. Relating to this, last week we announced a $76.6 million charge on our construction operations in Latin America, mainly related to write-downs on one ongoing project and write-downs of claims in two completed projects with fixed price contracts.

First steel beam placed for World Trade Center Oculus project

Last week in New York City, Skanska Koch placed the first steel beam for the dramatic Oculus building that will be the centerpiece of the World Trade Center Transportation Hub. We have a $204 million contract to erect the Oculus, designed by architect Santiago Calatrava. To place the Oculus’ roughly 11,000 tons of structural steel, Koch has erected two specialized tower cranes custom made for this project. The completed structure will stand 150 feet at its highest point. Click below to see photos.

Infrastructure as art: Metro Gold Line bridge completed near Los Angeles

USA Civil West in California has completed the Metro Gold Line bridge, a nearly $19.8 million, 600-foot-long bridge to carry light rail trains over and along the I-210 freeway. Serving as a gateway to the San Gabriel Valley, the structure is nothing like the utilitarian bridges over so many highways. Rather, this bridge is art in concrete.
