While the December 20 topping out of our $600 million Novartis Cambridge Campus Expansion in Cambridge, Mass., attracted the attention of politicians and the media, it was the beginning of the curtain wall installation two weeks ago that really stands out in the mind of Bryan Northrop, Skanska project executive.

Our team’s 1.5-mile extension of New York City’s No. 7 subway line won’t be completed until next summer. But a special guest still got to ride those rails Friday afternoon: outgoing Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who visited this Skanska joint venture project as the final stop on his farewell tour of the city.

Underpinning and Foundation Skanska, Skanska’s deep-foundation specialty contractor, opened a Boston office this fall, its first outside its home base in New York City. John Roma, most recently of Weeks Marine, has been hired to be Underpinning’s New England Area manager.

As part of our effort to sharpen our safety focus, Skanska is launching two-day Injury-Free Environment workshops across the country in 2014. These new workshops will center on the personal experiences and lessons learned of Skanska people, improving upon the decade-old IFE workshop format that these are replacing. All Skanska leaders will have the opportunity to participate in these workshops.
