Bayshore recognized for safety excellence

Bayshore Concrete Products – Skanska’s manufacturer of precast concrete components for infrastructure and other projects – has been recognized by the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute for its excellent safety record. This is because in 2013, Bayshore’s Cape Charles, Va., plant had a DART (days away, restricted and transfer) rate of zero, a feat achieved only by three other, similar U.S. plants with more than 100 employees.

For the past several years, Bayshore’s rating from PCI has been increasing, though this is the first time they have received the top rating.

Jim Gray, the plant’s EHS director, said employee engagement is key to safety. “Keep safety simple, and at times it’s got to be fun, something to wake them up and get them interested,” he said.

One way that Bayshore’s safety team helps achieve this is through its Undercover Safety Program, in which an executive, plant employee or visitor is sent into the plant with a missing piece of personal protective equipment. The first person to say something to the subject about the missing PPE is rewarded with a $25 gift card. The undercover agents and pieces of missing PPE vary in order to keep the activity fresh for employees. This program has helped establish a culture in which employees are constantly aware, and are comfortable speaking up.
