This “bite-size” Ironman may become a regular event

Inspired to do something to help their local Atlanta colleagues be healthier, Senior Estimator Jimmy Mitchell and Preconstruction Coordinator Andrewn Jackson decided to challenge them to do an Ironman: 2.4 miles of swimming, followed by 112 miles of cycling and then topped off with a 26.2-mile marathon run. But rather than doing those distances back-to-back as in an Ironman race, in Mitchell and Jackson’s Endurance Challenge participants have the entire month of August to reach the finish line.

Sound fun?

Enough people wanted to join that what was envisioned as an activity for a few Georgia colleagues has grown into a One Skanska effort with about 60 participants nationwide. They range from accomplished athletes to those who haven’t regularly exercised before, and from office staff to field personnel. Some are doing the entire challenge, while some are only doing one event, such as swimming.

“For me, the challenge sounded like a very creative idea,” said Ron Smith, project controls director. “Take an extreme athletic event and break it down to bite-size pieces so that most in the office can participate with one goal – completing an Ironman.  That is what drew me in.”

Said Administrative Assistant Cathy Denny: “My decision to participate was made at the last moment during Stretch and Flex. When I saw the raised hands of those who had accepted the challenge, I decided if they can do it, so can I. I am always up for a challenge and decided the competition would motivate me, and I definitely need to increase my physical activity. Hopefully, this will continue as a new life style for me.”

Though we’ve just reached mid-August, some participants – such as Superintendent Tim Maxson from Portland – have already completed the entire Ironman. Participants track their progress via a SharePoint site.

Some of our colleagues – including those in our Oakland office – are training together.

Mitchell said they plan to hold the Endurance Challenge again – maybe even in a few months.

  3. Sorry for the above- had my email wrong and didn’t realize my comment was lost! Anyway- New to SKanska. I have done a few sprint triathlons and an Ironman always sounds so exciting, but a the distances and time constraints make it a daunting task. Breaking it into pieces would be awesome! Please keep me posted on the next one!

  4. Would love to join in the next one if you can keep me posted!
