More than just sports: Entertainment projects now part of our Sports COE

What was our Sports Center of Excellence has broadened its focus to include such entertainment projects as convention centers, performing arts venues and outdoor amphitheaters, necessitating a new name for itself: the Sports & Entertainment Center of Excellence. Now for this expanded range of projects, this COE continues to provide specialized support regarding pursuits, best practices, personnel and branding.

Entertainment projects certainly aren’t new to us, as our portfolio includes such recent and ongoing projects as New York’s Nikon at Jones Beach Theater, the Raleigh Convention Center and Nashville’s West Riverfront Park. But this is a huge market that we can do more to tap. The Sports & Entertainment COE is tracking close to $3 billion in upcoming projects, said Tom Tingle, the COE’s national director. Most notably, this includes major convention center expansions in Boston, Los Angeles and Seattle.

The many similarities and overlaps between sports and entertainment projects make a combined focus for this COE worthwhile, Tingle added. Mainly, both building types are served by the same core group of design and construction firms. Additionally, the same facility management companies work on both building types, and many of the same types of products, equipment and materials occur in these facilities.

Resources for you

This year, the Sports & Entertainment COE will be doing more to communicate relevant industry trends and events, as well as resources available to project teams. Tingle – along with COE Business Development Director Alissa Roberts – will be building a cohesive database of relevant projects and staff with experience with these project types. Marketing materials will be updated and rebranded, and a market-specific e-newsletter will be distributed quarterly. (Please email alissa.roberts@skanska.com to be added to the distribution list.) This newsletter will feature such stories as our North Carolina office’s great efforts in pursuing a performing arts project in Greensboro, N.C.

Most importantly, Tingle and Roberts look forward to working closely with our offices and general managers on more pursuits and projects.

Our differentiators

Skanska brings considerable strengths to the entertainment market. With convention centers, our expertise in steel erection will help us find the best and most efficient solutions for the long-span roof structures needed in massive exhibit halls. And given that convention centers are frequently hubs of subways, busses and other transportation modes, our transportation know-how will help us integrate buildings and infrastructure.
