South Florida event broadens reach of IFE

At the end of this month’s Safety Week, our South Florida office held its first IFE Family Fun Day, which was intended to convey to trade partners, vendors, and the families of everyone involved with our projects our commitment to having injury-free environments.  It was modeled after the Family Safety Day that Skanska has long had in Queens, N.Y.

Nearly 500 people turned out for the Florida gathering that involved awards for commendable safety behaviors; remarks by Skanska leaders and an OSHA representative; vendor demonstrations; and games and activities for both adults and kids. While most of the 18 awards went to trade partners, two went to Skanska employees: EHS Director Daimon Perez, who won the local safety professional of the year award, and Foreman Dan Halmi, who won the local foreman of the year award.

A key aspect of the event was improving IFE awareness by trade contractor senior executives. Some of the trade contractor principals who attended have already invited us to provide IFE training across several levels of leadership at their firms.

To approach safety from another direction, Skanska Superintendent Tim Coons, who spearheaded the event, said he told children there to remind their parents to work safely.

“This was a true team effort,” Coons said. “Next year, it will be bigger and better.”

Many of Skanska’s South Florida executives and project leaders attended the event.
