Last week, Skanska USA CEO Rich Cavallaro talked with Jeremy Hobson of National Public Radio’s Here & Now show about the urgent need for the U.S. to improve and take a long-term view of its infrastructure, with the latest short-term federal transportation funding bill set to expire at the end of this month. His interview reached the show’s estimated 3.6 million weekly listeners on 400 radio stations across the country.

We’ve placed on hold our plans to buy additional energy-related construction companies because of the drop in oil prices over the past year, Rich Cavallaro, Skanska USA’s CEO, told Reuters news service.

Skanska group’s solid performance continued in the first quarter, with overall operating income increasing to $99.8 million, up 18 percent year-over-year adjusted for currency effects and the highest first-quarter operating income in five years. USA Building and USA Civil both significantly grew revenue, by 10.4 percent and 9.6 percent, respectively. However, tough winter conditions in this January-to-March period and a larger share of projects in the early stages – when less profit is recognized – helped drag down U.S. construction margins.
